Instagram Now Showing ‘Least Interacted With’ and ‘Most Shown in Feed’ in the Following Tab

This week we’ve seen Instagram roll out a new feature showing two new category listings within the “Following” tab. The two new categories show you which accounts get the most visibility in your feed, and which you rarely engage with.

The listing of those you don’t engage with simply recommends people/accounts you should unfollow as you don’t interact with them, while the most present list will give users more control over their algorithm-defined feed. If you’re not a fan of any of the accounts you see, you can remove or unfollow them.

Just like most of the other features Instagram have rolled out recently, this feature was spotted in testing during October 2019 - it was reported the test also included new topic categorisation for your following groups too, although this hasn’t yet been rolled out. Keep an eye out for this as we expect it to come soon!

I find it interesting to see social platforms creating a path towards follower curation, instead of the platforms prompting users to follow as many people as possible in order to maximise engagement.

Note that Twitter also experimented with something similar back in 2018, with recommendations of who people you might want to stop following in order to improve user enjoyment and engagement.

It’ll be interesting to see if other platforms bring out similar features over the coming months and the results achieved following this. How, or even if, this new feature will affect business use is currently unknown. Engagement for brands on Instagram has taken a hit over the past year anyway but a useful benefit of this new feature is that it could help you to pinpoint followers who are no longer engaged in your content, highlighting content variables that you may want to alter.
